ABSTRACT
Introduction: Neem is a fruit native to India that presents flavonoids in its composition, which could facilitate favorable memory and spatial learning states in rats according to their learning indices. Objective: To evaluate the effect of Azadirachta indica extract on learning and spatial memory in Rattus rattus.
Methods: An increasing stimulus design was developed. Two similar groups of five rats were arranged, each at pilot scale, grouped according to the dose concentration, which were given the extract orally at different concentrations and the control group was not treated, assessing learning and spatial memory in the Morris water maze.
Results: The rats that in baseline presented a behavior compatible with learning and spatial memory evidencing a similar average time to develop the latency times of the acquisition phase and in the retention phase; when applying the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg the learning rates of the pilot moved discreetly to the right. Therefore, the latency time of the acquisition phase was shortened, during the retention phase a memory development according to the learning index was evidenced.
Conclusions: The in vivo treatment with Azadirachta indica extract has presented a positive effect on the experimental subjects at the level of the duration of motor behavior in the Morris water maze, achieving relevant learning indexes.
