ABSTRACT

This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis that seeks the comparative effectiveness of pharmacological treatment and psychotherapy in major depressive disorder. The methodology of Evidence-Based Medicine was used; robust bibliometric and statistical strategies were employed to consolidate the information of 1000 articles published from 1916 to 2022, and focused on the last five years, 2018 – 2022. There were 20 with high impact and relevant “h” index. 59% of the articles supported combined therapy, and 41% evenly considered pharmacotherapy more efficient than cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. No study concluded that the use of antidepressants is overall more effective than psychotherapy. It is concluded that pharmacological therapy is more effective than psychotherapy, but if both are combined in different plans, the effectiveness achieved is much greater as long as cognitive behavioral therapy is used.
