ABSTRACT

Plastic surgery is a medical specialty with a broad scope of practice; however, it is often perceived as focused solely on aesthetics. This work analyzed the perspectives of medical students in Mexico regarding our specialty, evaluating their familiarity, interest, and perception. We carried out an observational, cross-sectional study using a digital survey distributed among medical students in Mexico. Among 102 students, 40.1% associated with the specialty while 51.9% expressed interest in pursuing plastic surgery, 58.6% had no clinical exposure. Media and social networks significantly influenced their perception (65.7%). We concluded that, despite interest, students lack a comprehensive view of plastic surgery. Stereotypes and limited exposure restrict their understanding, highlighting the need to integrate plastic surgery in medical curricula.
