ABSTRACT
Introduction: vertebral destruction syndrome is a pathology with multiple etiologies that causes structural alterations in the spine, specifically deformity with increased volume, which can cause mechanical and/or neurological compromise.
Objetives: to show the incidence and etiology of vertebral destruction syndrome in patients at our institute.
Material and methods: retrospective, observational, descriptive study. Inclusion criteria: patients of both sexes, over 18 years of age, with a confirmed diagnosis of vertebral destruction syndrome by histopathological report and laboratory and imaging studies, with a complete clinical record. Exclusion criteria: patients with incomplete clinical records and/or without valid rights, patients without results from the pathology service, patients who refused the treatment offered or did not have adequate adherence to the study protocol (three or more absences from scheduled appointments).
Results: higher incidence for men with 34 cases and 17 cases diagnosed in the female gender, with an age range of 25 to 85 years with an average age of 64.66 years. Vertebral bodies most frequently affected: L4: 18 cases; L2: seven patients; L5: seven patients; L3 on 11 occasions. The first cause of vertebral destruction syndrome in our population was neoplastic origin with 34 cases confirmed with histopathological report, followed by infectious origin with nine cases and finally eight cases of metabolic origin.
Conclusions: it is very important not to underestimate a case of low back pain and to carry out an adequate study of the symptoms to rule out this type of pathology.
