ABSTRACT
Introduction: the prevalence of mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression, is very high among young people. Medical
students are not immune to this increase.
Objective: to determine the possible association of depression and anxiety with some
personality traits or healthy lifestyle habits among medical students at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Method:
an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out. The universe was made up of 321 students who answered
the corresponding standardized and self-applied questionnaires electronically. To analyze the possible relationship between the
variables collected, logistic regression models will be applied.
Results: 75.4% (n = 242) were women and the mean age was 21.7
± 3.2 years. 62.9% (n = 202) and 70.4% (n = 226) of the students presented depressive and anxious symptoms, respectively.
Schizoid (n = 209; 65.1%) and anxious (n = 165; 51.4%) personality traits were statistically significantly associated with anxiety;
while anxious, dependent (n = 80; 24.9%), and anankastic (n = 229; 71.3%) traits were associated with depression.
Conclusions:
the presence of anxiety-depressive disorders among medical students in this Spanish sample is higher than among the general
population. There is an association between schizoid and anxious personality traits and the presence of depression. An association
was also found between previous mental diagnosis, dependent, anxious and anacastic traits, and anxiety.
