ABSTRACT
Introduction: oncological diseases have a high incidence in the world population; in Cuba constituting the second cause of death, among them, brain tumors. Objective: to determine the prognostic value of the functional capacities of the Karnofsky scale in patients with brain tumors. Methods: an observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was carried out in patients diagnosed with brain tumors treated at the "Abel Santamaría Cuadrado" General Teaching Hospital in Pinar del Río, during the year 2018. The universe consisted of 57 patients. Its entirety is studied. Results: the variables type of tumor, laterality and initial Glasgow scale did not behave as prognostic factors of functional capacity. Partial tumor resection presupposes a lower impact on the improvement of patients (p=0.041), those with total and subtotal resections have a better functional capacity prognosis (p<0.01). The greatest impact on the Karnofsky scale was metastasis (p<0.01). Oligoastrocytoma showed a lower impact on the scale (p=0.042). The location in the brainstem and cerebellum did not show a significant difference (p=0.108), it behaved as the worst prognosis, the frontal locations and the diencephalon showed highly significant differences (p<0.01), being the ones with the best prognosis of functional capacity. Conclusions: partial tumor resection presupposes a lower impact on the improvement of patients, those with total and subtotal resections have a better prognosis of functional capacity. The variables laterality, initial Glasgow scale and type of tumor did not show prognostic value.REFERENCES
