ABSTRACT
Introduction: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus has increased, among other causes, due to changes in the population lifestyle, and it even represents more than 10% in some countries. As the prevalence of diabetes mellitus increases, so does the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. Objective: To identify the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with diabetic retinopathy and associated arterial hypertension according to epidemiological and clinical variables.
Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out to identify the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with diabetic retinopathy and associated systemic hypertension. The patients were treated in the retina consultation of the Ophthalmological Center in Santiago de Cuba from October 2017 to October 2019. The population was made up of 52 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus older than 18 years with a diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy.
Results: Patients with diabetes mellitus diagnosis time greater than 10 years (69.3%) predominated. It was found that in the two groups studied, patients aged 55 or over (71.2%) and black skin color (63.5%) predominated. Out of the 52 patients included in the research, 76.9% had history of systemic hypertension, and eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy predominated.
Conclusions: Patients aged 55 years and over, regardless of the time of evolution of diabetes mellitus with history of systemic hypertension, developed some degree of retinopathy.
