ABSTRACT

Introduction: COVID-19 imposes new challenges on health systems. The collapse of medical institutions globally has led to the need to draw up new care protocols and new strategies for the treatment of chronic diseases. Ophthalmology does not escape these needs.
Objective: To describe the working method for the care of patients with glaucoma during COVID-19 pandemic in the period of physical confinement and the stoppage of almost all outpatient services.
Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out by some members of the Glaucoma group in the Ophthalmology Service at “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Surgical Clinical Hospital with the purpose of combining criteria and outlining work strategies for the care of patients with glaucoma. SciELO, Medscape and Pubmed Information databases were used in the search.
Conclusions: An accelerated deterioration of the state of vision and progression of damage to their visual field were found in the patients. Timely, organized, comprehensive and always available care for patients with glaucoma is essential to prevent irreversible deterioration of vision. The investigation made it possible to verify that the progression of the disease behaved in an accelerated pace, as evidenced in clinical practice.
