ABSTRACT

Introduction: caustic ingestion in pediatric patients can lead to potentially fatal complications. The most affected age groups are infants and preschool-aged children. We present the case of a newborn who accidentally ingested household bleach. Case report: a 16-day-old female infant was admitted to the emergency department after ingesting approximately 30 milliliters of household bleach, which had been mistakenly used to prepare her infant formula due to being stored in a mislabeled bottle. Minutes later, the patient developed nausea, vomiting, and irritability. Upper endoscopy revealed burns in the esophagus and stomach. She exhibited hemodynamic, respiratory, and neurological instability. Following the initiation of conservative management, the patient showed favorable clinical progress and was discharged eight days later. Conclusions: chlorine ingestion is an uncommon accident in this age group. Prevention is essential and can be achieved by properly labeling containers that hold chlorine or other caustic substances.
