ABSTRACT

Introduction: hip fractures represent a global health issue, with projections of up to 4.5 million cases annually by 2050. These injuries primarily affect older adults, who often experience significant loss of independence following the fracture. Medical care focuses on surgical management, often neglecting patient functionality and the role of informal caregivers, who take on this responsibility without adequate preparation, increasing their physical and emotional burden. Material and methods: a quasi-experimental study was conducted to evaluate the transfer and dressing skills of caregivers of older adults who had undergone hip fracture surgery, both before and after an educational intervention. The intervention included the presentation of an educational video and a practical demonstration of the activities, followed by an assessment using a validated checklist. The study was approved by the Local Health Ethics and Research Committee (R-2024-3401-054). Results: a total of 42 caregivers participated, most of them women (69%) and direct relatives of the patients (52.3%). Caregivers' skills improved significantly, increasing from correctly performing an average of three tasks to eight tasks after the intervention (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: the intervention significantly improved transfer and dressing skills in caregivers of hip fracture patients, regardless of their educational level.
