Average weights of newborns according to weight groups and maternal ages in Holguín: 1993-1996, 2013-2016

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The study of the weight on live newborns and the socio-economic factors that influence it are important in the prophylaxis of perinatal morbidity and mortality.
Objectives: To establish the differences observed on the weight of newborns in the studied periods in order to determine the influence of the economic crisis.
Method: A comparative retrospective cross-sectional study of the weight of newborns was carried out. The study universe was structured in two stages. The first stage (stage I) includes the years 1993-1996, known as the special period with 14 862 live births and a second one (stage II), with no crisis, of the years 2013-2016 with 14 591 live births. All mothers resided at Holguín municipality. The variables studied were birth weight of the newborns, their incidence by maternal age groups, weight groups, average weights and study stages. Percentage, averages and hypothesis tests were applied to the results.
Results: An increase in the percentage of live births was detected with statistical significance only in the age group of 40 years old and over. The decrease in the so-called underweights in the 2500-2999 g group in stage II was statistically significant as well as the increase in the groups from 3500- 4000 g in stage II. All average weights of every weight groups were higher in stage II.
Conclusions: The economic crisis of 1993-1996 had a negative influence on the birth weight of newborns at that stage.
