Clinical epidemiological behavior of diabetes mellitus type 2 in pediatric age at Holguín

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus in the pediatric age group has increased in recent years, constituting an emerging public health problem.Objective: To characterize the clinical epidemiologic behavior of diabetes mellitus type 2 in pediatric age.
Method: A descriptive study of series of cases of patients attended at the Pediatric Provincial Hospital “Octavio of the Conception y la Pedraja” at Holguín province, Cuba, from January 2008 to December 2020. The universe was composed of twenty-nine children and teenagers with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Results: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus has increased in the last four years with a rate of 13.2 per 100,000 inhabitants, especially in adolescents, with an average age at the debut of 10.7 ± 4.0 years. The main risk factors were: overweight, obesity (79.3%) and family history of the disease (69%). Most patients had no complications, only 20.7% were hypertensive at the onset of the disease. The most commonly used treatment was oral antidiabetics in 75.8%, with metformin (68.9%) being the most frequent.
Conclusions: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in pediatric age, in both sexes, has been gradually increasing in the province, especially in adolescents; it is related to risk factors such as overweight, obesity and first and second line family history. Most patients did not present complications and metformin continues to be the drug of choice in this age group.
