Active thyroid nodule research at ''Pedro Díaz Coello'' community from Holguín

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Thyroid nodules represent the fifth cause of appointments at the Endocrinology Institute of Havana and other services in the country.Objective: To carry out an active thyroid nodule screening in two clinics from "Pedro Díaz Coello" health area at Holguín municipality.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at two clinics from "Pedro Díaz Coello" health area in Holguín, Cuba, during the period from January 2020 to July 2021. A total of 1955 persons, the general population of clinics seven and eight of this health area, constituted the universe. The intended sample consisted of 527 persons, who were physically present at their homes during the house visit and underwent a physical examination on the neck and thyroids.
Results: During the active investigation at the community 29 patients with thyroid nodules were found. Thyroid nodules with one to three centimeters of diameter were more frequent in the right lobe and represented 58.62%, in Caucasian females in the age group of 51 years and older for 65.48%, thyroidopathies prevailed as risk factor and associated diseases in 55.10% of them.
Conclusions: The active investigation at the community permitted to determine that the prevalence of this affection in 5.50% of the studied population; being an important tool for the family doctor in the early diagnosis and the adequate follow-up of the patient with thyroid nodule, corroborated by echography which prevails as the most sensitive morphological study of the thyroid, which is accessible in all health areas.
