ABSTRACT

Introduction: Although rare, traumatic lesions of the rectum and anus, may occur in isolation or associated with other lesions in pelvic, abdominal or bone organs, showing a wide variety of lesion patterns and multiple causes. The improvement of the indicators of complications and mortality depend on an adequate diagnostic and therapeutic behavior.
Objective: To identify the behavior and results of the treatment of anorectal traumatic lesions.
Methods: An observational and descriptive study was carried out in 14 patients diagnosed with anorectal trauma from March 2017 to June 2019 at the General Hospital of Sabya, Saudi Arabia.
Results: Male patients predominated (85.7%), 50% belonged to the age group between 31-40 years, traffic accidents constituted the main cause of trauma (64.2%), 42.8% presented injuries in other organs, being the pelvis fracture the most frequent one (21.4%), the partial lesion (grade IA) of the wall of the rectum was diagnosed in 35.7% and the primary repair of the lesion with or without colostomy was the most performed technique (57%). No complications or mortality were reported.
Conclusions: The behavior of anorectal traumas was similar to the one reported by literature in all the studied variables, with a special attention in the correspondence to the existing protocols for this type of trauma.
