Causes and conditions of drug abuse in Ecuador

ABSTRACT

The situation of drug use in Ecuador has gone through different approaches, mediated by specific historical moments, with the sociocultural influence of the evolutionary process. The possibility of facing the increasingly complex situation of drug use is lost in ambiguous and confusing talks such as "the war against drugs", "confronting the scourge of drugs" and "the eradication of the evil of drugs". The current methods of confrontation show the desperate desire to face a complex problem with simple solutions and the diminishing hope of eradicating something that is meant to stay. The causes and conditions associated with the evolutionary process of the recent history of drug use in Ecuador were analyzed, focusing attention on the need for a multidisciplinary and intersectoral confrontation with the participation of social actors and with family interventions that achieve a change in the lifestyles.
