ABSTRACT

Introduction: blood donation is essential to save lives and requires strict donor selection based on standardized clinical criteria to ensure donor and recipient safety. In Mexico, there are no studies that directly relate the lack of knowledge of donation requirements with the aptitude of the donors. Objective: to analyze the relationship and prediction between the lack of knowledge of the requirements to donate blood and the aptitude of candidates at the Blood Collection Center of the General Hospital of Cozumel to be classified as unfit. Material and methods: an observational, cross-sectional, and quantitative study was conducted on 994 candidates evaluated in 2021, using pre-questionnaires and clinical records. The data were analyzed with SPSS Statistics 26 using binary logistic regression. Results: of the total number of candidates, 61.4% were classified as unfit. 69.3% are aware of the donation requirements; 30.7% are not, and of those, 23.3% were classified as ineligible. Candidates who were unaware of the requirements were 4,788 times more likely to be classified as unfit, with a probability of 66.3%. Conclusions: ignorance of the requirements significantly increases the chances of being unfit. It is critical to implement educational strategies to improve the screening process and ensure a safe blood supply.
