Art therapy: a valuable educational resource for children with behavioral disorders

ABSTRACT
Background: Art therapy is an effective methodological approach for the diagnosis and treatment of children with behavioral disorders and to achieve social commitment and a better quality of life. The authors have set as their objective: to establish a theoretical-methodological support derived from the application of art therapy in plastic expression for the educational treatment of children with behavioral disorders.Methods: a bibliographic review was carried out on art therapy, its definitions and application in 2024, from which a theoretical-methodological support was derived, feasible to be applied in the treatment of children with behavioral disorders. Several texts were consulted and 23 in Spanish were selected, among them 8 doctoral theses, three international blogs and several journal articles. The key words used were art therapy, plastic expression and methodological approach.
Results: Art therapy constitutes the practice of psychological therapy through the exercise of art. Reference is made to artistic manifestations and plastic expression is recognized as the most used. The support of plastic expression as a modifier of behavioral disorders in school children, its empirical foundations, the pedagogical requirements of the workshop as a pertinent organizational form in its activities, the oral, visual and practical methods and the procedures related to the experiential practice of the environment and group work are described.
Conclusions: a theoretical-methodological support was formed on the use of art therapy that demonstrates the possibility of being applied in the educational work with children with behavioral disorders.
