ABSTRACT
Background: the elective subjects are intended to broaden and update students on scientific or technological topics related to the profession.Objective: to design a program for the elective course General Physical Examination whose contents constitute a scientific basis for teaching the subject Foundations for Nursing Care I.
Methods: a development research was carried out at the Faculty of Technology of Camagüey University of Medical Sciences, during the 2020-2021 academic year. Theoretical methods were used: analysis-synthesis and inductive-deductive and the systemic approach; and empirical methods: documentary analysis of teaching programs, and questionnaire to students and teachers to determine the contents to be introduced in the program. Nine specialists with 10 years of experience in teaching were selected, three with a scientific degree of PhD. and six associate professors, who, based on analysis and argumentation, provided evaluative criteria on its relevance and methodological structure.
Results: the program was designed based on the contents of the general physical examination structured in four topics, with a face-to-face course and a duration of 40 hours. It contains general educational and instructive objectives, specific objectives, content, methodological guidelines and an evaluation system. It was evaluated by specialist criteria.
Conclusions: the optional course contains essential knowledge that optimizes the development of the teaching-learning process. Its creation responded to a need and in practice reinforced the scientific basis for the acquisition of knowledge of the governing subject.
