ABSTRACT
Introduction: Polipharmacy represents a frequent problem in hypertensive pa-tients nowadays. There are pharmacological evidences for the use of Allium sativum as antihypertensive agent. Objective: To describe the hypotensive effect of the Allium sativum tincture in hy-pertensive patients.
Method: A case series study was carried out in patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure admitted to the Hospital Docente Gustavo Aldereguía Lima, in Gibara, Holguín, Cuba, from September to December 2019. The study’s population, which coincides with the sample, was composed of 28 patients. Variables such as age, gender, blood pressure figures and adverse reactions were studied. Absolute and relative frequencies as well as Chi square test were used to determine the inde-pendence between variables (p<0.05).
Results: It was found a predominance of females (60.6%) as well as of age group under 55 years old (42.8%). The reduced systolic blood pressure figures in the larg-est number of patients were between 6 to 10 mmHg (42.9%), and those of diastolic blood pressure were less than 5 mmHg (64.2%). The average time of blood pressure reduction was 15 minutes. The lack of association between the hypotensive effect on systolic blood pressure and the time it takes to effect was demonstrated. Patients without adverse reactions (89.3%) predominated.
Conclusions: In patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure, Allium sativum tincture significantly reduced blood pressure figures in approximately 45 minutes, with no relevant adverse reactions.
