ABSTRACT

Atherosclerosis is a progressive inflammatory systemic disease that mainly affects the wall of large and medium-sized arteries. Vitamin D can stop or prevent several triggering factors of this disease and its use has been proposed to prevent it. Hypo-vitaminosis D is related to diseases that are triggering or aggravating factors of ath-erosclerosis. The use of vitamin D as a prophylactic measure to treat atherosclerosis should theoretically work, which is why large studies have been done to prove this theory. The large controlled researches have evidenced its positive effect on the prevention of triggering factors, but not on atherosclerosis, something that could be contradictory. A review of the most recent literature on the subject was carried out with the aim of describing the role of vitamin D in the prevention of atherosclerosis.
