Urticaria and angioedema

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Urticaria is one of the most common skin conditions and is defined as the presence of hives, angioedema, or both. It is a frequent reason for consultation. Around 20% of the population has suffered from it at some point in their lives. The chronic form has a serious impact on patients, and carries serious socio-economic implications.
Objective: To provide an update on the subject of urticaria and angioedema.
Methods: A literature review of national and international literature was carried out in the main available databases: Pubmed, Medline, Cochrane, Hinari and SciELO. A total of 29 scientific publications in English and Spanish on the subject were selected, most of them with less than five years of update.
Conclusions: Antihistamines are the cornerstone of urticaria therapy. Corticosteroids should be avoided, if used they should be used as a rescue startegy, and only for short cycles.
