Characteristics of oral cancer in Artemisa in the four-year period 2015-2018

ABSTRACT

Introduction: oral cancer in Cuba occupies between the seventh and tenth place as the cause of death in the elderly, which constitutes a health problem.
Objective: to analyze the behavior of mortality from oral cancer in Artemisa, in the period between January 2015 and December 2018.
Methods: descriptive cross-sectional study of data obtained from the Provincial Department of Medical Records and Health Statistics of the Provincial Health Department of Artemisa. Variables such as: age, sex, anatomical location, as well as percentage related to the total deaths from cancer in general were studied. The percentages, the average and the rate per 100,000 inhabitants were used as the unit of summary of the results.
Results: male deaths predominated, with an average age of over 60 years, the highest percentage of location was in the tongue, followed by the lower lip, with an average oral cancer mortality rate of 4.05 per 100,000 populations.
Conclusions: the lethality due to oral cancer in the province of Artemisa turned out to be low with reference to the total number of deaths due to malignant tumors in the period analyzed, as well as the average mortality rate. These data constitute an alert for health personnel about the importance of intensifying the work of promotion and prevention, as well as the application of the measures established in the National Oral Cancer Detection Program to reduce the increase in cases, improve the prognosis and, consequently, reduce mortality.
