Clinical changes in relation to post-abdominoplasty intra-abdominal pressure

ABSTRACT

Introduction: changes in intra-abdominal pressure can cause alterations in patients undergoing abdominal dermolipectomy.
Objective: to describe the clinical changes related to intra-abdominal pressure in patients undergoing dermolipectomy.
Methods: cross-sectional descriptive study. The universe consisted of 33 patients who underwent dermolipectomy in the Plastic Surgery service of the Manuel Ascunce Domenech University Hospital in Camagüey from January 2018 to April 2020. Intra-abdominal pressure was estimated according to the number of centimeters plicate to the abdominal wall, changes in respiratory and heart rate, and also according to the use of the abdominal binder.
Results: Most patients with grade I intra-abdominal pressure had between eight and 10 cm of the rectus abdominis plicate. Of the 17 patients who presented grade I intra-abdominal pressure, eight had a respiratory rate between 17 to 21 breaths per minute. Only two patients showed heart rates of 100 or more beats per minute. The number of patients with Grade I and II intra-abdominal pressure increased in the postoperative period, with the use of the abdominal binder.
Conclusions: no considerable increase in respiratory and heart rate was observed in relation to intra-abdominal pressure levels. The abdominal binder caused an increase in intra-abdominal pressure levels in the majority of patients.
