ABSTRACT

Food addiction is a persistent and recurrent disorder that manifests itself in eating patterns characterized by compulsive and uncontrolled intake, predominantly of high-calorie foods. These addictive behaviors are usually the result of the interaction of different biological, psychological and social factors, which increase the desire to consume certain foods. Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder are chronic recurrent diseases that affect a significant portion of the population and manifest themselves in extreme changes in eating habits, which can include both excessive intake and severe food restriction. Likewise, they can lead to both an increase and a decrease in body mass index, depending on the specific nature of the condition. Food addiction and eating disorders are closely related to several medical problems: obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, gastrointestinal disorders and nutritional deficiencies.
