COVID outbreak-19: lessons learned, University of Medical Sciences in Holguín

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Epidemics of unknown emerging diseases test the technical and human capacity of health professionals and society in general.
Objective: To characterize the event of COVID-19 in the student´s facility of the Faculty of Medical Sciences "Mariana Grajales Cuello" of Holguín, in 2021.
Method: A descriptive observational study of a series of confirmed cases of COVID-19 was developed, the secondary attack rate and the basic reproduction index were determined, which was estimated with the classic Kermack and Mckendrick model. The hot zones were identified and the main anti-epidemic measures were enunciated.
Results: Male students predominated with 76,9%, the secondary attack rate among Angolans was 25,49%, the fourth floor was the hottest area, the epidemiological history identified the source of infection in 100% of the cases, with 38,46% asymptomatic, the main symptoms were loss of taste and smell, headache and fever, the R0 index reached the value of 1,31 and on day 16 of the outbreak, it began to disappear.
Conclusions: The COVID-19 outbreak was quickly controlled with timely and effective anti-epidemic measures, without extension to the community and it left us important lessons learned for future health emergencies.
