ABSTRACT

Introduction: Health promotion is a political and social process that involves actions aimed directly at strengthening the skills and capabilities of individuals, as well as those aimed at modifying social, environmental and economic conditions in order to mitigate their impact on public and individual health.
Objective: To determine the effectiveness of a procedure for the promotion and prevention of health in patients at risk of basal cell carcinoma.
Methods: A pre-experimental study was developed with a before and after design without control group, in patients who attended the type A health center: El Vergel located in Cantón, Valencia in the province Los Ríos, Ecuador, from January to November 2022. The universe was composed of all the patients who attended the aforementioned health center during the defined period. The sample consisted of 100 patients aged from 47 to 75 years, in which risk factors for basal cell carcinoma were identified; these were selected by purposive sampling.
Results: There was a 65% increase in the number of patients who achieved a good knowledge of health education on basal cell carcinoma issues after the educational procedure.
Conclusions: The procedure of health promotion and prevention in patients at risk of basal cell carcinoma combined instructional and educational actions, particularized for each patient and allowed a significant improvement of health education in these patients.
