ABSTRACT

The case of a patient with ectopic cervical pregnancy that was systematically administered methotrexate as an alternative to surgical treatment is presented in this article. Medical treatment consisted in the administration of methotrexate by endovenous route and administration of folic acid at doses when methotrexate was not administered. The case was controlled with evolutive human corionic gonodatropin (hCG) and ultrasonography. At the moment, the methotrexate is considered as a conservative treatment in ectopic cervical pregnancy. Cervical pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy, in which the egg is implanted in the cervical canal and causes its distension as it grows. Painless hemorrhage its clinical characteristic and on the physical examination it is observed a very vascularized hypertrophic cervix with a tissue that surpasses the external orifice. Ultrasonography may be used as a useful complementary diagnostic tool to show directly the presence of a gestational sac.
