ABSTRACT
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that nearly one million pregnant women contract syphilis each year, and more than two-thirds will experience severe adverse events during pregnancy. The global prevalence of syphilis remained stable between 2012 and 2016. However, an alarming increase has been observed since 2018. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 2.5 million cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia were reported in 2022. Since 2000, a total of 2 622 cases of congenital syphilis (CS) have been recorded in Mexico, with a significant increase in 2008, with 168 confirmed cases. The incidence of syphilis in Mexico decreased until 2013. However, starting in 2014, cases showed an upward trend, with 372 confirmed cases recorded in 2019 (an incidence of 16.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants under one year of age) and 989 cases in 2023.A review of current regulations and various documents published by the Mexican government for the detection of syphilis in pregnant women and the prevention of congenital syphilis is presented. Thirteen current documents were found.
