Effect of an Educational Intervention on Knowledge and Metabolic Control in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the impact of
an educational intervention through
a website on knowledge and glycemic
control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: A 12-month clinical trial was
conducted in patients diagnosed with
type 2 diabetes, who were randomly
assigned to either a medical and nutritional
therapy group (n= 50) or an
experimental group receiving medical
and nutritional therapy plus access to
a diabetes educational website (n= 58).
Baseline and follow-up measurements
over 12 months included weight,
body mass index, waist circumference,
glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides.
Diabetes knowledge was assessed using
the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire
(DKQ-24).
Results: At the end of the
intervention, a significantly higher
proportion of participants in the experimental
group (62%) demonstrated
adequate diabetes knowledge compared
with the control group (38%, p=
0.004). Significant improvements were
also observed in glucose, cholesterol,
triglycerides, and body mass index
within the experimental group (p‹0.05).
Conclusion: An educational website
improves knowledge, glycemic control,
and lipid profiles in patients with type 2
diabetes attending a primary care clinic.
