Depression and Burden in Caregivers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

ABSTRACT

Objective: To identify the presence of caregiver burden and depressive symptoms in primary caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorders. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out. Burden was assessed using the Zarit Burden Interview and depression using the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale. Results: Among 50 caregivers, 66% presented with a caregiver burden, of which 22% was mild, and 44% severe. In addition, 28% showed symptoms of mild depression. A positive association was found between depression and caregiver burden (χ2= 8.371, p‹0.05), indicating that 28% of depressive symptoms could be explained by caregiver burden, while the remainder was attributable to other factors (r= 0.385, p‹0.006). Female caregivers predominated (92%), with a mean age of 40 years; 62% were dedicated exclusively to household and patient care, and 42% had a university degree. None of the participants had received formal training in caregiving, and 54% received support for socio-educational integration, such as accompaniment or special education services. Conclusion: Caregiver burden and depressive symptoms are frequent among primary caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder and are significantly associated. It is essential to recognize caregivers as key actors in the care of this population and to develop preventive strategies aimed at improving their quality of life.
