ABSTRACT
Aging constitutes a biological process with multifactorial causes. Oxygen free radicals could play a prominent role in this process. The mitochondria is responsible for the production of the energy necessary for all cellular processes and through such processes it is the main producer of oxygen free radicals in human beings. The cardiac muscle, due to its contractile function, maintains vital organs and tissues. For such vital function the cardiac myocytes possess a large number of mitochondria to compensate for the large energy demands required for proper cardiac functioning. Older adults have a variable number of mitochondrial DNA deletions in tissues resulting in a very marked oxidative metabolism. These deletions occur in organs of great functional importance such as the brain, skeletal muscle and myocardium. These alterations result in cardiomyocyte death and the appearance of diseases such as cardiac insufficiency. Today exists novel therapies to prevent said consequences to the myocardium of the aging process caused by mitochondrial dysfunction.
