ABSTRACT

Nutrition deserves special attention in the elderly because the physiological decrease in nutrient intake is one of the main risk factors for certain chronic diseases and age-related deterioration of health. Likewise, the physical inactivity that is frequently associated with aging is one of the fundamental factors that contributes to the appearance of sarcopenia, an aspect of central importance in frailty. The objective of this article is to review the relationship between nutrition and physical exercise in older adults and to determine the different modalities and the effectiveness of nutrition and physical exercise interventions in the elderly. A search was carried out in the databases PubMed, National Library of Medicine and Lillacs and textbooks from which the scientific documents used in the preparation of this article were obtained. It was concluded that nutritional interventions with food supplements combined with multicomponent physical exercise programs may be beneficial to improve indicators related to frailty and its comorbidities in the elderly.
