ABSTRACT

Introduction: At the end of 2019, COVID 19 (coronavirus disease 2019) emerged, a new disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov 2). The age group with the highest susceptibility to contracting the infection and its complications has been the elderly, with the highest rate of respiratory distress syndrome, water and mortality; this population has several factors that contribute to the increase in this vulnerability.
Objective: This review aims to compile the predisposing factors that contribute to COVID-19 and to determine the usefulness of dietary nutrients as a benefit for this disease in older people.
Methods: A bibliographic review of articles in Pubmed, Google Scholar and LILACS was carried out, using keywords related to the objectives. Articles related to publication date between 2020- 2021 were retrieved, using keywords such as: Covid 19, Sars-CoV2, older adult, clinical manifestations, diet, vitamin D, said search in Spanish and English.
Conclusion: The world is currently in a pandemic caused by SARS CoV-2, with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. The geriatric population has characteristic risk factors that make it more susceptible to contracting COVID 19. The nutritional status of older people is a key point for the evolution and treatment of COVID 19 to maintain an adequate immune response.
