Prevalence of major geriatric síndrome

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Geriatric giants are a set of pictures usually originated by the conjunction of diseases with high frequency in the elderly, which can cause loss of functionality, dependence or the appearance of another syndrome.
Objective: To establish the prevalence of the major geriatric syndromes.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, descriptive research was carried out on patients hospitalized in the Geriatrics Service of the Faustino Pérez Teaching Surgical Clinical Provincial Hospital of Matanzas, in the period December 2021 to November 2022. The universe was constituted by 105 patients with Major Geriatric Syndromes in the study period and who met the inclusion criteria. Sociodemographic, clinical and functional variables were used. A data collection form and the functional scale were used.
Results: As a result, there was a predominance of females in the research, prevailing the age group from 80 to 89 years old. Immobility, cognitive impairment-dementia and falls stood out in the patients studied. A significant portion of the elderly showed some compromise of functionality, with functional frailty being the most frequent.
Conclusions: The major Geriatric Syndromes or Giants of Geriatrics are underdiagnosed, so it is essential to perform a thorough geriatric evaluation to identify them and to establish adequate diagnostic and therapeutic plans for their correct management.
