ABSTRACT
Introduction: Moderate physical activity can delay functional decline and reduce the risk of chronic diseases in older adults. Objective: To evaluate the benefits of a physical exercise program on the health of older adults.
Method: An observational, descriptive, and prospective study was conducted in a medical office in the San Miguel del Padrón Municipality, Havana, between September 2020 and February 2021. The sample consisted of 125 older adults from the community, of whom 63 were selected to participate in the proposed exercise program. Clinical and functional variables were analyzed through interviews, observation, and review of medical records.
Results: Physical exercise was practiced in 54.8% of the patients, predominantly female (57.5%) and aged 60-69 years (38.1%). Chronic disease control was achieved in 70.4% of hypertensive patients, 60.0% of asthmatics, 82.2% of arthropathy patients, and 79.2% of patients with depressive disorders. Dosage reduction was achieved in 55.6% of hypertensive patients, 60.0% of asthmatics, 44.4% of arthropathy patients, and 45.8% of those with depressive disorders.
Conclusions: The exercise program improved the health of older adults, contributing to their quality of life.
