ABSTRACT

Introduction: the shift change is one of the main nursing tasks. Ensuring the accurate transference of patient information can prevent errors and enhance patient safety. Training nursing students is essential for achieving satisfactory shift changes, along with developing effective communication skills. Objective: to determine the effectiveness of clinical simulation training in improving handover skills in nursing students. Material and methods: an educative experimental intervention (clinic simulation) was conducted, involving 18 nursing students from 2nd and 6th semesters. All participants attended a workshop to familiarize themselves with the shift change process, and their proficiency was evaluated before and after the workshop using clinical simulation scenarios of equal complexity. Results: significative improvements were observed in both groups following the evaluations. Conclusion: clinical simulation is deemed an excellent educational strategy for enhancing shift change competency in nursing students to increase patient security and students' self-thrust.
