The paper by Méndez-Sánchez reports on two potentially intriguing observation. The first is the gene expression of apo-1 in liver but not in gallbladder tissue, and the second that a short treatment with UDCA increases the hepatic expression of apo-1. Unfortunately non data are reported on the level of the protein. The dose of the UDCA given (4 mg/kg bwt) was unfortunately much lower that the recommended dosage (10 mg) thus raising the interesting hypothesis that the upregulation induced by the drug may be even higher should UDCA being administered at a proper dosage.
