Prevalence of visceral obesity in patients with acute diverticulitis

ABSTRACT

Introduction: diverticular disease is a growing public health problem, associated with factors such as Western diet and obesity. Although body mass index is a reference anthropometric measure, it does not allow accurate diagnosis of visceral obesity, as it does not directly estimate abdominal fat. In contrast, bioimpedance analysis is a cost-effective and reproducible alternative, comparable to techniques such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, for measuring visceral adipose tissue. Material and methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence of visceral obesity by bioimpedance analysis in 10 patients admitted for acute diverticulitis hospitalized at the Hospital General de Zona No. 3 of Aguascalientes, during May to November 2024. Results: the analysis revealed that 90% of patients had visceral obesity, including 40% of those who were overweight according to BMI. Conclusions: bioimpedance analysis allows identifying visceral obesity in patients with acute diverticulitis more accurately than BMI, highlighting its clinical relevance for the management of this condition and its relationship with gastrointestinal disorders.
