ABSTRACT
Low birth weight is a global health problem associated with high neonatal morbidity and mortality. A common complication in these neonates is respiratory insufficiency, caused by pulmonary immaturity, reduced alveolar development, and prenatal nutritional deficiencies. Additionally, gastrointestinal immaturity limits the adequate intake of nutrients and energy, affecting postnatal growth. The use of supplemental oxygen is common in NICUs due to the immaturity of pulmonary development, and its prolonged use is associated with increased energy demands and growth deficiencies. This study evaluated 102 preterm newborns with very low birth weight who were admitted between 2020 and 2023, comparing their weight at 28 days and the need for oxygen therapy. It was observed that adequate weight reduces oxygen use, while oxygen saturation levels below 92% are associated with growth deficiencies. These findings highlight the importance of optimal nutrition.
