Kennedy terminal ulcer and nutrition care in older adults in paliative care

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Kennedy's terminal ulcer is a natural tissue event that occurs at the end of life, whose hypothesized etiology is linked to the diversion of blood to central organs and the inevitable collapse of cutaneous failure.
Objectives: To describe Kennedy's terminal ulcer and the importance of adequate nutrition in palliative care patients.
Methods: A literature review was conducted on the following topics: Kennedy's terminal ulcer, nutrition in older adults in palliative care. The database used for the search of references was PubMed, Scielo, LILACS and Google Scholar. Twenty-three articles and three official web pages related to the topic were reviewed.
Development: In 2009 Sibbald and collaborators published Skin Changes at Life's End or SCALE. They conclude that knowledge about skin changes at the end of life is limited, therefore further research and expert consensus is needed. The SCALE instrument has been the first to admit that the ulcer formed could be part of the dying process, defining a series of criteria necessary to differentiate them from those produced exclusively by pressure and/or shear.
Conclusion: It is necessary to continue researching and updating the subject of unavoidable injuries, in order to give an adequate approach and treatment to patients with this type of injury, Kennedy's terminal ulcer was the first to be described.
