ABSTRACT
Introduction: Sialorrhea refers to the uncontrolled flow of saliva out of the mouth. This symptom can occur in children with neurological diseases. In these cases, the use of a neuromuscular bandage is effective as a therapeutic alternative to complement conventional treatment. Methods: Descriptive study, 55 patients attended by the Department of Speech Therapy of the Childrens Neurology Clinic of CIREN, between January/2018-December/2019 for 56 days, with neurological diseases: cerebral palsy, delayed psychomotor development and epilepsy; and development and epilepsy; and with dysarthria, anarthria and developmental delay in language, aged between 4 and 13 year. For the initial and final evaluation, the following were applied: articulatory praxis scale and drooling impact scale. For the analysis of the results, the percentage calculation was used, and the SPSS program for the data.
Results: It was obtained 81.8% total improvement for the control the of sialorrhea and significant differences between the initial and final evolution for a correlation probability of P<0,01, the signs of frequency and severity of drooling, daily changes of bibs and skin irritation.
Conclusions: The application of the neuromuscular bandage placed on the supra-hyoid region and the orbicularis oculi muscle provides a clinical improvement of sialorrhea in children with neurological diseases. Its use is recommended as a complementary method to other conventional techniques.
