ABSTRACT

Histomorphologic prognostic biomarkers that can be measured using only an hematoxylin and eosin stain are very attractive because they are simple and cheap. Breslow thickness or Breslow index (BI) is the cornerstone of staging of malignant melanoma, one of the most important prognostic factors for patients with cutaneous melanoma and the basis of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM classification. Although molecular assays have recently been developed to establish melanoma prognosis, their high cost limits their use. This review provides a comprehensive summary to provide insight into the accuracy and prognostic value of new, inexpensive and easy to measure predictive variables in melanoma with the Breslow Density (BD), Calculated Tumor Area (CTA), Targeted Burden Score (TBS) and Invasive Breadth, recently studied, complementary to IB and which have the peculiarity of enhancing prognosis and staging of malignant melanoma.
