ABSTRACT
Introduction: the anesthesiologist plays an essential role in the operating room, ensuring patient safety during surgery, although public perception of his work is usually limited.
Objective: determine the perception of general surgery patients towards the anesthesiology service of the General Hospital of Zone No. 20, before the surgical procedure.
Material and methods: a descriptive, observational study was carried out. Men and women aged 18-60 years, scheduled for surgery by the general surgery service, were included. Performing descriptive statistics and univariate and inferential analysis, through bivariate analysis by difference of means and χ
2 for our nominal variables, with a significance level of 0.05.
Results: 300 patients were included, with an equal distribution between men and women, and significant differences were observed in the perception of the anesthesiologist's activities, especially in procedures such as lipoma excision and cholecystectomy with a difference of 0.02.
Conclusion: this study demonstrated that the role of the anesthesiologist in the operating room remains unclear, showing that patients are unaware of the role of the specialist in the operating room.
