ABSTRACT

A position statement (PS) is a secondary source document intended to express a clear and concise opinion on a specific issue. Unlike primary research, it does not require experimental evidence but relies on a well-structured, critical discussion supported by rigorous justification of each argument to maintain objectivity. This article provides a standardized framework for the development of PS, highlighting their role as essential tools to synthesize evidence and clinical expertise in scenarios of limited or contradictory data. The proposed methodology includes a critical review of the literature and structured expert consensus processes, ensuring clarity and applicability in clinical practice. PS serve as preliminary clinical guidance, representing the first step in resolving controversies and forming the foundation for the development of formal consensus documents and clinical practice guidelines (CPG). Their strategic role lies in reducing variability in clinical decision-making, fostering the standardization of healthcare delivery, and supporting continuous medical education. Ultimately, PS are positioned as indispensable instruments within evidence-based medicine, bridging expert opinion and the rigorous frameworks of CPG, while contributing to the progressive improvement of medical practice.
