ABSTRACT

Today we will discuss the history and treatment of scoliosis; it is as old as human history itself. To the extent possible, we will list the personal efforts of some notable men who sought to improve the lives of their fellow human beings suffering from this spinal condition. Due to the three-dimensional nature of scoliotic deformity, the trunk and the entire body are biomechanically affected. With the twisting of the spine, the spinal deformity can cause gibbosity and anxiety in the patient about aesthetic appearance. Notable effects of scoliosis can include postural deviation, body asymmetries, altered scapular movement, unrealistic perception of body image, and functional deviations, which can have a negative impact on health-related quality of life. Although significant progress has been made in understanding the development, progression, and treatment of spinal deformities, even with current surgical advances, the understanding of this disease remains incomplete.
