Eye traumatic lesions in boxers from the Provincial Academy in Mayabeque

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The Boxer preparing Program in Cuba does not refer to the particularities and the possible lesions and complications of eyes. Objective: To determine the incidence of eyes traumatic lesions in boxers from Mayabeque in the special preparation stage of the macro-cycle. Methods: An observational, descriptive, prospective and cross-sectional study was carried out in 18 boxers from the Boxing Provincial Academy in Mayabeque in the special preparing stage of the macro-cycle 2017 - 2018. The universe under study was formed by 28 athletes, 56 examined eyes. The studied variables were: categories, division, chronological and sports average age, eye lesions of annexes as well as anterior and posterior segments of the eyes. The information was obtained by interviews and the Ophthalmological clinical records. Results: In the Young category the medium division prevailed in a 56.2 %, chronological average age was of 16.5 and sports one was of 3.8; in the social category the heavy division prevailed as well as the average chronological age of 20.07 and the sports one of 5.5. In the anterior segment were the most frequent lesions of the eyelids, 16 % and the category was the most affected. The anterior eye segment was the most affected in a 19.6 % and the superficial corneal excoriation in the 21.4 %, there was no difference in lesions of the posterior segment, but it was in their anatomical location. Conclusions: Boxing, as a fighting sport, causes eye traumatic lesions during trainings and competitions, which can be no significant, but they shorten the active permanency of boxers and affect their life quality.REFERENCES
