Oral symptoms and sequels in positive patients to COVID-19

ABSTRACT

Introduction: COVID-19 is a disease caused by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, that has impacted the world, because of the deaths it has produced and the multiple sequels that patients who has suffered from it still have. Objective: To determine the oral symptoms and sequels in positive patients to COVID-19 at PCR test. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out, in patients of the Northern health area from Güines, Mayabeque province, from September, 2021 to March, 2022. The population under study was formed by 54 patients with positive results to SARS-CoV-.2 at PCR test. A data collecting form was elaborated, an interview and the oral clinical examination were performed to patients. The studied variables were the symptoms, and oral sequels. As summary measure, the percentage was used and the results in tables. Results: The 79.62 % of the patients presented symptoms and oral sequels, the neurologic disorders were more frequent in the 93.02 %, the most common sequel was mouth burning with a 53.48 %, hypogeusia was the damage that prevailed with a 23.25 % and the 53.12 % of the patients with periodontal disease presented the clinical complicated form of the disease. Conclusions: In positive patients to COVID-19, neurological symptoms and mouth burning prevailed. The oral cavity can be the first alarm scenery in the disease. Dentists play an essential role in the early diagnosis, so assessment of oral health is necessary in the behaving protocols to convalescents de COVID-19.
