ABSTRACT
Introduction: aging is a universal, heterogeneous, and progressive process that involves multiple changes in individuals and their environment, as well as in the presence of diseases and the way they are addressed. Among geriatric syndromes, sarcopenia is characterized by the loss of muscle mass and strength, including deterioration in physical performance, leading to multiple consequences such as falls, hospitalizations, and premature mortality. The current demographic transition toward an aging population highlights the need for increased awareness, accurate identification, and early management of this condition.
Objective: to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and its associated factors in hospitalized older adults at the Central Military Hospital.
Material and methods: patients were randomly selected from multiple inpatient wards of a tertiary care hospital. Men and women aged 60 years and older who met the established inclusion criteria were enrolled. Participants underwent an interview along with assessments to determine muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical performance.
Results: a total of 200 patients were included, 112 (56%) women and 88 (44%) men, finding a prevalence of total sarcopenia of 72.5%, with 71.0% being severe and predominantly in females (42.0% for women versus 29.0% for men).
Conclusions: sarcopenia is a highly prevalent condition among hospitalized older adults. A clear association between age and severity was observed, with both the prevalence and severity of sarcopenia increasing as age advances.
