ABSTRACT

Introduction: cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a common congenital anomaly. Patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CUCLP) have deformities of the lip, palate, alveolus and nose. In order to improve postoperative aesthetic results, presurgical orthopedics is used with different techniques such as the SAC-PP-MR system, with its palatal plate and adjustable nasal shaper. There is controversy about the benefits of presurgical orthopedics in patients with CLP. Objective: to evaluate the aesthetic results of the SAC-PP-MR system in patients with CLP and to compare the postoperative results. Material and methods: non-randomized clinical-surgical trial. 18 patients with CLP were selected in two groups: a group with and without presurgical orthopedics. Results: at the end of the presurgical orthopedics we obtained changes in the alveolar gap, the cleft fossa and the labial cleft, however, when comparing the post-surgical results of both groups there were no aesthetic differences. Conclusions: there are no differences in the post-surgical aesthetic results between both groups, however, there are significant changes with a high effect in the use of presurgical orthopedics in the reduction of the alveolar gap, which decreases the rate of nasoalveolar fistula and possibly improves the results in the nasoalveolar graft.
