ABSTRACT

Introduction: respiratory infections are the main infectious diseases of children, rapid and definitive diagnosis is imperative in treatment, molecular studies have been widely accepted, FilmArray respiratory panel (PR) is very useful from the early stages. Objective: describe the prevalence of respiratory viruses by molecular diagnosis, clinical-epidemiological characteristics associated with the risk of children around the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and methods: observational, cross-sectional, analytical study of FilmArray PR reports of boys and girls from a 3rd level hospital during 2021-2023. For statistical analysis, means, standard deviation, t test for independent groups, tests for comparison and estimation of proportions, χ2, and multiple logistic regression were used. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 26. Results: 380 patients from 0 to 17 years of age were included, with an average of 3.47 ± 3.89, 160 women (42%) and 220 men (58%). The prevalence during the study period was 80%, the most frequent viruses were rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial and parainfluenza 3, the most frequent coinfections were rhinovirus and respiratory syncytial, the autumn season was a risk factor and the most frequent age was under five years. Conclusions: molecular techniques are very sensitive and specific, these findings allow us to identify specific agents, direct treatments and install better preventive measures, which help guide better public health plans, since the prevalence of viruses during the COVID-19 pandemic and the years next following, suggest a change in this distribution.
